Pharmacological Properties
Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is a non-steroidal peptide hormone secreted by the embryo in the early stages of pregnancy, and later by the trophoblast (part of the placenta), controlling the hormonal levels of a pregnant woman.
In a man’s body, hCG has similar properties to luteinizing hormone (LH). It stimulates the testicles, leading to increased testosterone production. Athletes use gonadotropin to maintain testicular function during their cycles.
Often, you may come across recommendations to use hCG during post-cycle therapy (PCT). However, this is a misconception. The purpose of PCT is to restore the hypothalamus-pituitary-testicular axis. While gonadotropin does affect the testicles, it does not increase LH production. In fact, the testosterone produced when taking hCG can suppress LH. Therefore, using hCG after the cycle will only delay the recovery process.
Advantages of Gonadotropin
- Stimulation of spermatogenesis.
- Stimulation of progesterone production.
- Increased growth in the development of genitals, as well as sex hormones.
Why Do Bodybuilders Use It?
It is well-known that testicular atrophy occurs during a long cycle of anabolic steroid use, and gonadotropin is taken in order to prevent it. The aim is to increase the secretion of testosterone by the body, specifically by the testicles. Using gonadotropin at lower doses is considered safe. It should be noted that during a long cycle of steroids (if it exceeds 6 weeks or more), it is important to ensure the preservation of testicular function.
Chorionic gonadotropin is typically used during post-cycle therapy, although some people may take it before it.
Chorionic gonadotropin can also be used for weight loss to maintain muscle bulk. Scientists believe that gonadotropin programs the hypothalamus to consume fat reserves while protecting the muscles from catabolism. It is recommended to take small (and therefore safe) doses of HCG – 125 IU daily – alongside a low-calorie diet of less than 1500 kcal per day. This diet is practiced in many specialized weight loss programs. It should be noted that during such a cycle, it is necessary to consume a sufficient amount of protein and vitamins.
Dosage
The recommended option is to use hCG at the end of the cycle to stimulate the testicles and prepare them for PCT. If the cycle is long, it is also important to administer gonadotropin for 2 weeks in the middle of the cycle. Gonadotropin remains active in the body for up to 5 days.
When taking hCG, it is important to remember that high dosages and frequent injections can lead to a decrease in sensitivity and even complete immunity of the testicles to gonadotropins. Therefore, the interval between the uses of hCG should be at least 6 months.
- HCG use: 2-3 weeks at the end of the cycle (+2 weeks in the middle of long cycles).
- Dosages of HCG before PCT: 1000-2500 IU every 2-3 days.
- Dosages of HCG on the cycle: 1000 IU/week, starting from the 3rd week of the cycle.
Contraindications
You should not take Gonadotropin in case of:
- Allergies to medication components.
- Pituitary tumor.
- Hormone-active tumors (including androgen-dependent) of the gonads.
- Early onset of menopause.
- Absence of genital glands (congenital, after surgery).
- Thrombophlebitis.
- Lactation.
- Ovarian cancer.
- Hypothyroidism.
- Adrenal insufficiency.
- Hyperprolactinemia.
- Obstruction of the fallopian tubes.
Take with caution in case of:
- Ischemic heart disease.
- Adolescence.
- Arterial hypertension.
- Chronic kidney disorders.
- Bronchial asthma.
- Migraine.
Use During Pregnancy and Lactation
Do not stop lactation during treatment.
Overdosage
In case of overdosage among women, ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome can occur, resulting in an increase in ovarian size due to ovarian cysts with the danger of rupture, ascites, and hydrothorax. Signs such as weight gain, tension, abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, and difficulty breathing can indicate its appearance. Treatment is symptomatic.
