Description
Citicoline (injection) Solution
Composition
Citicoline is a water-soluble compound that is integral to the synthesis of phosphatidylcholine, a major component of the grey matter of brain tissue (30%). Each mL of Citicoline (injection) solution contains the active ingredient, Citicoline sodium equivalent to Citicoline 250mg.
Description
Citicoline (injection) is a nootropic agent with neuroprotective properties. It enhances brain metabolism by increasing glucose utilization and has been found to normalize the levels of various neurotransmitters.
Pharmacology
Citicoline is a complex organic molecule that functions as an intermediate in the synthesis of phosphatidylcholine from choline. Phosphatidylcholine is a major phospholipid in eukaryotic cell membranes. Close regulation of its biosynthesis, degradation, and distribution is essential to proper cell function.
Pharmacokinetics
Following injection, Citicoline is rapidly hydrolyzed into choline and cytidine in the bloodstream. It is widely distributed throughout the body and crosses the blood-brain barrier. It undergoes hepatic metabolism and renal excretion.
Indications
Citicoline (injection) is indicated in acute ischemic stroke, traumatic brain injury and for cognitive impairment due to degenerative diseases and vascular dementia. It is also used off-label for cognitive symptoms in conditions such as attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease.
Contraindications
Citicoline (injection) is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to Citicoline or any of the other components in the formulation.
Warnings and Precautions
Patients with a history of severe renal or hepatic impairment should be carefully monitored while receiving Citicoline. It should be used with caution in patients with a history of hypersensitivity reactions.
Interactions
There are no known significant interactions with Citicoline. However, it may interact with medications that are metabolized by the liver. It is always advisable to discuss with the healthcare provider about all the drugs/over the counter products/vitamin supplements used before starting on Citicoline.
Adverse Reactions
Common side effects of Citicoline (injection) include nausea, diarrhea, low or high blood pressure, insomnia, and blurred vision. Most of these side effects are temporary and may disappear as your body adjusts to this medication.
Dosage and Administration
The recommended dose for Citicoline injection is 500-2000 mg administered once or twice daily. The dosage may be adjusted according to the severity of the disease and the patient’s response to the drug. The injection should be administered intravenously or intramuscularly.
Overdosage
In case of overdose, symptomatic and supportive treatment should be given as appropriate. The symptoms of an overdose may include hypotension, sweating, and diarrhea.
