Description
Folic Acid Tablets 5mg, #50
Composition
Each tablet contains 5 mg of the active ingredient Folic Acid. Inactive ingredients include lactose monohydrate, microcrystalline cellulose, maize starch, and magnesium stearate.
Description
This medicine is a water-soluble B-vitamin (Vitamin B9) essential for DNA synthesis, cell division, and the proper development of the nervous system. It plays a critical role in the formation of red blood cells and is particularly important during periods of rapid growth such as pregnancy and infancy.
Indications
- Treatment and prevention of folate deficiency
- Support during pregnancy to prevent neural tube defects (e.g., spina bifida)
- Adjunctive therapy in certain anemias, such as megaloblastic anemia
- Prevention of folate deficiency due to chronic conditions, such as malabsorption syndromes or long-term use of certain medications (e.g., methotrexate, phenytoin)
Pharmacological Action
Folic Acid is converted in the liver to its active metabolite, tetrahydrofolic acid, which functions as a coenzyme in numerous essential biochemical reactions. It assists in the synthesis of purines and pyrimidines—the building blocks of DNA—and is vital for methylation reactions, amino acid metabolism, and erythropoiesis.
Dosage and Administration
- Adults: 1 tablet (5 mg) per day, or as prescribed by a physician
- Pregnant women: May require higher doses (up to 5 mg daily), especially if at high risk for neural tube defects
- Children: Use only under medical supervision
The tablets can be taken with or without food. Swallow whole with water. Do not chew or crush unless advised by your doctor.
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to folic acid or any excipients
- Undiagnosed anemia without vitamin B12 level assessment
- Should not be used alone to treat pernicious anemia or other vitamin B12 deficiency-related anemias, as it may mask symptoms and worsen neurological damage
Warnings and Precautions
It should be used cautiously in patients with epilepsy, as high doses may lower the seizure threshold. In those with vitamin B12 deficiency, folic acid supplementation can correct hematologic symptoms while allowing neurological damage to progress. Always evaluate B12 status before initiating folic acid therapy.
This medication is generally safe in pregnancy and lactation, but always consult a healthcare provider. Patients with hereditary problems of galactose intolerance or lactose intolerance should avoid the product due to lactose content.
Adverse Reactions
- Rare: Gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, bloating, flatulence
- Uncommon: Allergic skin reactions (rash, pruritus)
- Very rare: Hypersensitivity (e.g., anaphylaxis), sleep disorders, irritability
If any severe reaction occurs, discontinue use and seek medical attention.
Drug Interactions
Folic acid may reduce plasma concentrations of certain anticonvulsants (e.g., phenytoin, phenobarbital). Conversely, antifolate drugs such as methotrexate and trimethoprim may antagonize folic acid. Consult your doctor before combining with other medications.
Overdosage
Folic Acid is generally well tolerated even in higher doses. However, extremely high doses may cause symptoms such as nausea, gastrointestinal upset, confusion, behavioral changes, or seizures. In case of suspected overdose, seek medical assistance immediately.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place at temperatures below 25°C. Protect from moisture and direct sunlight. Do not use after the expiry date printed on the package. Keep out of reach of children.
Manufacturer
Manufactured by a certified pharmaceutical company compliant with international GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) standards.
