Drops.
Main physical and chemical properties: clear solution, from colorless to yellowish color or slightly yellowish-brown color, slightly viscous solution with almost imperceptible odor.
Pharmacological Properties
Guttalax picosulfate is used for fast weight loss and gentle bowel cleansing for constipation. It belongs to a group of medications used in gastroenterology as a laxative element.
The main active ingredient of the medication is sodium picosulfate. This medication, with laxative properties, belongs to the triarylmethane group.
Due to metabolic processes occurring after the medication penetrates the body, absorption of liquids is slowed down, and water production and electrolyte release increase. This results in softened defecation, increased amount, and additional stimulation of peristalsis in the intestine.
Sodium picosulfate is minimally absorbed in the intestine, with partial absorption occurring after bacterial breakdown. It is absorbed upon entering the colon, undergoes conjugation, and is excreted with bile through the intestine.
Guttalax Use
This medication is taken for the treatment of:
- constipation;
- other conditions requiring easier bowel defecation (bowel movements).
Contraindications
Guttalax picosulfate is contraindicated for use in cases of severe hypersensitivity (allergy) to the main ingredient or inactive components.
Also contraindicated for:
- intestinal obstruction;
- severe dehydration;
- acute diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, including appendicitis;
- acute abdominal pain with nausea and vomiting.
Concurrent use with diuretics and adrenocorticosteroids increases the risk of electrolyte imbalance. It should not be used with antibiotics as they can weaken the laxative’s effect. Not recommended for children under 4 years old.
Method of Use and Dosage
Guttalax picosulfate is intended for oral use, preferably in the evening. The lozenge can be swallowed with or without liquid. The laxative effect occurs 10-12 hours after intake.
Guttalax Dosage:
- Adults – 10-18 drops once a day, at night (maximum – 18 drops);
- Children (4 years and older) – 5-9 drops at night (maximum – 9 drops).
Start with the minimum dosage and increase gradually if needed. Children’s usage should be prescribed by a doctor. Use should be limited, avoiding systemic use unless the cause of constipation is established. Prolonged use can lead to electrolyte imbalance, fluid imbalance, and potassium deficiency.
Overdosage
Overdosage cases have not been registered yet. Excessive intake of the medication can cause:
- excessive liquefaction of feces, diarrhea;
- intestinal spasms;
- clinically significant loss of electrolytes, potassium;
- chronic diarrhea.
Symptomatic treatment is recommended, including stomach rinsing, inducing vomiting, maintaining fluid intake, using enterosorbents, antispasmodics, and astringents.
Side Effects
The medication is generally well tolerated. Side effects can include:
- hypersensitivity reactions, including angioedema;
- rash, allergic urticaria, itching;
- abdominal cramps, diarrhea, flatulence;
- discomfort of the gastrointestinal tract.
