Guttalax Picosulfate Drops 15 ml, #1 Solution
Composition
Each milliliter of Guttalax Picosulfate contains 7.5 mg of Sodium Picosulfate. Inactive ingredients include purified water, sorbitol solution, and sodium hydroxide. The formulation is free of alcohol and sugar, making it suitable for a wide range of patients, including diabetics.
Description
Guttalax Picosulfate is a stimulant laxative available as a clear or slightly yellowish solution. It comes in a 15 ml bottle with an integrated dropper for accurate dosing. The product is designed to be taken orally, typically diluted in a glass of water.
Indications
- Relief of occasional constipation
- Bowel evacuation prior to diagnostic procedures
- Preparation for colorectal surgery
- Situations requiring facilitated defecation (e.g., postoperative care)
Pharmacological Action
Sodium Picosulfate is a stimulant laxative that acts on the colon. After activation by bacterial enzymes in the large intestine, it stimulates peristalsis and promotes the accumulation of water and electrolytes in the intestinal lumen. This softens the stool and facilitates its passage. The onset of action typically occurs 6 to 12 hours after administration.
Dosage and Administration
- Adults and children over 10 years: 10–20 drops (5–10 mg) once daily, preferably in the evening
- Children 4–10 years: 5–10 drops (2.5–5 mg) once daily, under medical supervision
Drops can be taken undiluted or mixed with water. The dosage should be adjusted based on individual response. Do not exceed the recommended dose.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to sodium picosulfate or any excipients
- Severe dehydration
- Intestinal obstruction or ileus
- Acute surgical abdomen, including appendicitis
- Inflammatory bowel diseases (e.g., Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis)
- Severe abdominal pain with nausea and vomiting
Precautions
Prolonged or excessive use may lead to electrolyte imbalance (e.g., hypokalemia), dehydration, and dependence. If symptoms persist beyond 5–7 days, seek medical advice. Use with caution in elderly patients and those with renal insufficiency or cardiac disease.
Adverse Reactions
- Common: Abdominal cramps, diarrhea, nausea
- Uncommon: Vomiting, bloating, flatulence
- Rare: Allergic skin reactions, electrolyte disturbances
If any serious or unusual side effects occur, discontinue use and consult a physician.
Drug Interactions
Concurrent use with diuretics or corticosteroids may increase the risk of electrolyte imbalance. Use with cardiac glycosides (e.g., digoxin) may potentiate toxicity due to hypokalemia. Antibiotics may reduce efficacy by altering gut flora responsible for activation of the drug.
Overdose
Overdose may result in severe diarrhea, fluid and electrolyte loss, abdominal pain, and metabolic alkalosis. Treatment includes supportive care and rehydration. In severe cases, hospitalization may be necessary.
Storage
Store at room temperature (15°C to 25°C). Protect from heat and direct sunlight. Do not refrigerate or freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Manufacturer
Guttalax Picosulfate is manufactured by Sanofi, a globally recognized pharmaceutical company known for its high safety and quality standards.
