Composition

Each sachet of Heptral contains 500 mg of ademetionine (also known as S-adenosyl-L-methionine or SAMe). Inactive components may include flavoring agents, citric acid, and sweeteners to improve palatability. The powder is intended to be reconstituted in water prior to oral administration.

Pharmacological Group

Heptral belongs to the pharmacological group of hepatoprotective and antidepressant agents. It supports detoxification processes, regeneration of liver cells, and exhibits neuroprotective and mood-stabilizing properties.

Indications

• Chronic liver diseases: cirrhosis, hepatitis (viral, alcoholic, or drug-induced)
• Intrahepatic cholestasis in adults
• Depression resistant to standard therapy
• Osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia (as adjunct therapy)

Mechanism of Action

Ademetionine is involved in methylation reactions, transsulfuration, and aminopropylation, which are vital for hepatic cell regeneration and neurotransmitter metabolism. It replenishes SAMe levels in the liver and central nervous system, enhancing glutathione synthesis and detoxification pathways.

Dosage and Administration

• Usual dose: 800–1600 mg/day (2–4 sachets), in 2 divided doses after meals
• Method: Dissolve the contents of each sachet in a glass of water and drink immediately
• Duration: Varies based on condition; follow your healthcare provider’s instructions

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to ademetionine or any excipients
• Children and adolescents under 18 years
• Use with caution during pregnancy and lactation

Precautions

• May trigger manic episodes in patients with bipolar disorder

Overdose

Symptoms may include gastrointestinal distress, agitation, or confusion. In case of overdose, seek immediate medical attention. Supportive care is the mainstay of treatment.

Storage

Store Heptral sachets in a dry place at temperatures between 15–25°C. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight or moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Do not use expired or damaged sachets.
