Heptral Active Ingredient: Ademetionine

Each vial of lyophilized powder contains 949 mg of ademetionine 1,4-butanedisulfonate, corresponding to 500 mg of ademetionine cation.

Inactive Ingredient:

None

Each ampoule of solvent contains L-lysine, sodium hydroxide, and water for injections.

The powder is lyophilized for solution for injection.

Main Physical and Chemical Properties:

The lyophilized powder is a compacted mass of white to yellowish color, free of foreign particles. The solvent is a clear liquid of colorless to pale yellow, free of foreign particles. The prepared solution is a clear solution of colorless to yellow color, without visible sediment.

Contraindications

Do not use if you are hypersensitive to the active ingredient or any other element of the medication. Do not use if you have genetic defects affecting the methionine cycle and causing homocystinuria and/or hyperhomocysteinemia.

Method of Use and Dosage

Treatment can start with parenteral use of the medication followed by tablet use. Divide the daily tablet dose into 2-3 doses. Swallow the tablets without chewing. Heptral tablets have a special coating that dissolves in the intestine, releasing ademetionine in the duodenum. For better absorption and therapeutic effect, take the tablets between meals. Remove tablets from the blister immediately before taking. If the tablets are not white or yellowish (due to damage to the aluminum wrapper), do not use them.

Initial Therapy:

Oral recommended dosage is 10-25 mg/kg of body weight per day. Initial dosage is 800 mg/day; total daily dosage should not exceed 1600 mg.

Intravenous or intramuscular recommended dosage is 5-12 mg/kg of body weight per day over 2 weeks. Initial dosage is 500 mg/day; total daily dosage should not exceed 1000 mg (for parenteral use, use Heptral in the form of lyophilized powder for solution for injections).

Side Effects

Heptral is generally well-tolerated, but some patients may experience nausea, dyspeptic disorders, heartburn, gastralgia, sleep disturbances, and allergic reactions. If you experience unusual reactions during treatment, contact your doctor.

Overdosage

Overdosage cases with ademetionine are rare. If overdosage occurs, contact your local poison control center. Patient observation and supportive care are recommended.
