Description
Likopid Tablets 1 mg, #10
Likopid is an immunomodulatory medication containing the synthetic molecule glucosaminylmuramyl dipeptide (GMDP), a derivative of a natural component of bacterial cell walls. It is primarily used to stimulate the innate and adaptive immune systems, and is approved for use in a variety of infectious and inflammatory conditions, including respiratory and dermatological disorders.
Composition
- Active ingredient: Glucosaminylmuramyl dipeptide (GMDP) – 1 mg per tablet
- Excipients: Lactose monohydrate, potato starch, magnesium stearate
Note: The previously listed “glatiramer acetate” is incorrect for Likopid and refers to another drug used in multiple sclerosis. Likopid does not contain glatiramer acetate.
Pharmacological Group
Immunomodulator (innate immune system stimulant)
Mechanism of Action
GMDP stimulates macrophage and neutrophil activity, increases cytokine production (e.g., interferon, interleukins), enhances antigen presentation, and improves overall immune responsiveness. It mimics microbial fragments, thereby priming the immune system without causing infection or systemic inflammation.
Therapeutic Indications
- Recurrent respiratory tract infections in adults and children
- Chronic bronchitis and obstructive pulmonary disease (as adjunct therapy)
- Chronic dermatological infections (acne, furunculosis)
- Urogenital infections (e.g., prostatitis, urethritis, cervicitis)
- Psoriasis (as part of complex therapy)
- Secondary immunodeficiency conditions
Dosage and Administration
- Adults: Typically 1 mg once daily for 10 days
- For chronic/recurrent infections, treatment may be repeated after a break (e.g., two 10-day courses with a 20-day interval)
- Tablets should be taken on an empty stomach, preferably in the morning
- Do not chew or crush; swallow whole with water
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to GMDP or any excipients
- Autoimmune diseases (e.g., systemic lupus erythematosus)
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding (unless advised by a doctor)
- Children under 3 years of age (for 1 mg formulation)
Precautions
- Use with caution in individuals with a history of allergic conditions
- Not intended for use in acute febrile states (>38°C); delay treatment until fever subsides
- Consult a healthcare provider if you have immunologic disorders or take immunosuppressants
Possible Side Effects
- Transient fever (up to 38°C)
- Skin rash or local allergic reactions
- Fatigue or mild malaise in early days of use
- Rare: headache, gastrointestinal discomfort
If symptoms persist or worsen, discontinue use and consult your doctor.
Drug Interactions
- Can be used concurrently with antibiotics, antivirals, and antifungals to enhance efficacy
- May reduce the frequency of antibiotic courses in chronic infection management
- No known major drug interactions reported
Overdose
No cases of serious overdose have been reported. In case of accidental overdose, observe the patient and provide symptomatic treatment if necessary.
Storage
- Store at room temperature (15–25°C)
- Keep in original packaging, away from light and moisture
