Each 10 ml of Sodio Bicarbonato Monico solution contains 10 mEq of Sodium Bicarbonate.
Description
Sodio Bicarbonato Monico is an alkalinizing agent that is commonly used to correct the acid-base balance in various clinical conditions. It is a white, crystalline powder that is highly soluble in water.
Indications
Sodio Bicarbonato Monico is indicated in the treatment of metabolic acidosis which may occur in severe renal disease, uncontrolled diabetes, circulatory insufficiency due to shock or severe dehydration, extracorporeal circulation of blood, cardiac arrest and severe primary lactic acidosis. It is also indicated in the treatment of certain drug intoxications, including barbiturates (where dissociation of the barbiturate-protein complex is desired), in poisoning by salicylates or methyl alcohol and in hemolytic reactions requiring alkalinization of the urine to diminish nephrotoxicity of blood pigments.
Contraindications
Sodio Bicarbonato Monico is contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to sodium bicarbonate or any component of this medication. It is also contraindicated in patients with metabolic or respiratory alkalosis and in patients with hypocalcemia in which alkalosis may produce tetany.
Dosage and Administration
The dose and rate of administration depend upon the individual needs of the patient. In general, 2-5 mEq/kg body weight can be given in severe conditions. Sodio Bicarbonato Monico should be administered by slow intravenous injection.
Side effects
Possible side effects include hypernatremia, hypokalemia, metabolic alkalosis, and fluid overload. Less common side effects may include muscle spasms, convulsions, and increased heart rate.
Precautions
Before using this medication, tell your doctor if you have heart disease, kidney disease, or liver disease. Also, inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
Interactions
Drugs that may interact with Sodio Bicarbonato Monico include corticosteroids, corticotropin, amphotericin B, cardiac glycosides, and lithium.
Storage
Store at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not freeze. Keep out of the reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, seek immediate medical help. Symptoms of overdose may include muscle weakness, slow or irregular heartbeat, or mental/mood changes such as confusion.
