Composition

Each vial contains 500 IU of human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG), a glycoprotein hormone produced by the placenta. The package includes 5 ml of solvent for reconstitution, typically bacteriostatic water or sodium chloride solution.

Description

Chorionic Gonadotropin is used in fertility treatments for both men and women. It mimics the natural luteinizing hormone (LH), triggering ovulation in women and stimulating testosterone production and spermatogenesis in men. It is widely used in assisted reproductive technologies (ART) and in cases of hormonal imbalance.

Pharmacological Action

hCG binds to LH/hCG receptors in the ovaries and testes, promoting ovulation and corpus luteum formation in women and stimulating Leydig cells in men to produce testosterone. It supports the development of secondary sexual characteristics and reproductive function. hCG also contributes to the maintenance of early pregnancy.

Indications

• Induction of ovulation in anovulatory women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
• Assisted reproductive procedures, including IVF
• Male hypogonadotropic hypogonadism
• Cryptorchidism in prepubertal boys (not due to anatomical obstruction)
• Improvement of sperm count and fertility in men with secondary hypogonadism

Dosage and Administration

Dosage is individualized. Typical protocols include:

• Women: 5,000–10,000 IU administered intramuscularly or subcutaneously as a single dose after follicular maturation.
• Men: 500–1,000 IU three times per week for several weeks or months depending on therapeutic goals.

Only administer under healthcare supervision. Use sterile technique and reconstitute powder with provided solvent immediately before use.

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to hCG or any excipients
• Prostate cancer or androgen-dependent tumors
• Uncontrolled thyroid or adrenal dysfunction
• Ovarian cysts unrelated to polycystic ovary syndrome
• Undiagnosed vaginal bleeding
• Pregnancy for non-approved indications

Precautions

• Risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), particularly in women with PCOS
• Risk of multiple births with ovulation induction
• Use cautiously in patients with cardiovascular disease, epilepsy, asthma, or migraines
• Monitor serum estradiol and perform ultrasound to assess ovarian response

Adverse Reactions

• Common: Headache, irritability, fatigue, injection site pain, gynecomastia (in males)
• Women: Abdominal pain, bloating, OHSS symptoms
• Rare: Thromboembolism, depression, allergic reactions

Drug Interactions

No major interactions reported, but concomitant use with other fertility agents (e.g., FSH, GnRH agonists) requires careful hormonal monitoring to avoid overstimulation.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Approved for use to induce ovulation but not for ongoing treatment during pregnancy. hCG use after confirmed pregnancy is not recommended. Unknown if excreted in breast milk; use caution while breastfeeding.

Overdose

Symptoms may include abdominal swelling, OHSS, vomiting, or shortness of breath. Treatment is symptomatic. Seek medical help immediately if overdose is suspected.

Storage

• Store lyophilized powder at 2–8°C (refrigerated)
• Protect from light
• Use reconstituted solution immediately or store in refrigerator and use within 24 hours
