Description
Pregnyl Vials, 5000 IU, #1 Solution
Composition
Each vial of Pregnyl contains 5000 International Units (IU) of Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG), a glycoprotein hormone produced naturally during pregnancy. The formulation also includes inactive ingredients such as mannitol and sodium phosphate to stabilize the lyophilized powder for reconstitution.
Description
Pregnyl is presented as a lyophilized powder that must be reconstituted before intramuscular or subcutaneous injection. It is used in fertility treatment regimens to promote ovulation in women and stimulate testosterone production or increase sperm count in men. In boys, it can be used to address cryptorchidism (undescended testicles).
Pharmacological Action
hCG mimics the action of luteinizing hormone (LH). In women, it stimulates ovulation by inducing the final maturation of ovarian follicles. In men, it promotes the production of testosterone by acting on the Leydig cells of the testes, which supports spermatogenesis and development of male secondary sexual characteristics.
Indications
- Induction of ovulation in anovulatory women
- Treatment of male infertility caused by hypogonadotropic hypogonadism
- Stimulation of testicular descent in boys with delayed puberty and cryptorchidism
Dosage and Administration
Dosage must be individualized and administered by a healthcare provider. Example regimens include:
- Women (Ovulation Induction): 5000–10,000 IU one day after the last dose of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)
- Men (Hypogonadism): 500–1000 IU three times a week for several weeks
- Boys (Cryptorchidism): 500–4000 IU three times weekly for 3 weeks
Contraindications
